of gang infiltration
- Discusses the need for
professional help in gang intervention
Gangs are
spreading rapidly around the country. According to some
experts, “You either have a gang problem or you are going to
have a gang problem.” It is important for educators to
recognize the early warning signs.
A Guider to Surviving a
Hostage Encounter

your students were taken hostage by a student or intruder?
- This unique program examines the
dynamics of a hostage situation from the hostages
perspective. Dozens of useful ideas are presented to
maximize a successful resolution to the problem.

negotiator will be discussed
Any school
shooting could have easily become a hostage situation. In the
past two years, a number of school hostage situations have
occurred where students, teachers or administrators were held
hostage. Understanding the dynamics of an encounter, whether in
school or in one’s personal life, could be a lifesaver.

not visible, bullies are everywhere and must be dealt with.

effective strategies for identifying bullies and keeping the
problem under control.

provoking slide presentation will explore the bully problem and
how it affects everyone, not just the victim. Suggestions will
be made as to what classroom teachers, administrators, the
school community and parents can do to help the children

Predicting, Preventing and
Surviving Student Unrest (Riots)

school girls deal with the risks of dating, going off to
college and traveling by car or public transportation.

more information.
This
nationally acclaimed women’s safety program has been presented
at conferences around the country. The spring of 2002 it was
presented at the National Summit on Preventing Youth Violence
in Washington D.C. and the Int’l Youth Crime Watch Conference
in Orlando. Find out what has made this powerful and at times
humorous slide program a “must see” for women of any age,

weapons dilemma.

bring weapons to school"

weapons
- How to react if confronted with a
weapon
This eye
opening slide presentation will discuss the hows and whys
weapons are brought to school. The latest in school security

Garrett Electronics and others will be presented. Educators
will learn why they are possibly the most important deterrent in
preventing weapons from coming into school.

the Potentially Violent Student or Parent

language to reduce conflict

de-escalation techniques
- Non-verbal communication as a tool
to deal with others

Body
language is greatly affected by race, culture and ethnic
influences. With our classes more frequently attended by a
greater variety of students, expanding our understanding of B.L.
is helpful. When angry or hostile, all groups behave amazingly
alike. This enlightening slide program will take the participant
into the hidden world of non-verbal communication. For most,
non-verbal communication is viewed on an unconscious level.
When properly understood, verbal and non-verbal communication
can help recognize and minimize potentially dangerous
situations. It is a must see program for educators.
Why kids can’t, won’t or
don’t learn
Much
attention has been focused on why young people perform poorly on
state exams or are dropping out of school, 25%-30% drop out
annually. “Raising the bar” has been a widespread response to
improving poor performance and I think we might be “missing the
boat.” This powerful slide program examines 15-20 issues that
seem to be neglected by the “experts” in their rush to improve
student performance.
Stopping Hate &
Promoting Tolerance
Intolerance, racial and ethnic violence in America’s schools is
growing. This slide program is based in part on a program
developed by the Southern Poverty Law Center. A great
deal of research has gone into identifying steps that schools
and communities can do to reduce hate and promote tolerance.
Weapons of Mass Destruction
As
frightening as the title might be, the reality today is that
schools can be targeted. Some of these weapons can be and have
been produced by students. Our students have access to
all the information needed to create a chemical bomb from
household products, at a cost of around $4, from the library or
Internet. Even more frightening, it has already been done.

Why Schools Can Expect More
Riots in the Future – Long
Island schools have experienced at least 7 of riots in the past
year. Some were covered by the media and some were not. Is this
the beginning of a trend? I believe it is. The program addresses
many of the risk factors that are currently present in schools
that could trigger a riot and at the same time offers proactive
steps schools can take to reduce the risk. (Program length 2
hours)**
The Dangers of Rioting
(A Student’s Program) –Students are often caught up in the
moment and give little thought to either personal risk or
consequences. This slide presentation focuses on both the
dangers and consequences of participating in a riot. It provides
warning signs of an impending riot and steps that can be taken
to leave as quickly as possible.
*A Profile of the **Unsafe**
**School*
- There is no “perfect” school.
However, it is in everyone’s (administration, teachers and
students) best interest to make schools safer. This slide
program examines certain conditions, practices and policies that
lead a school to the “Who’s Next?” list. Once you know what’s
wrong, you are on the first step to making some positive
changes.
